‘Tis the season of sharing gifts, food and holiday celebrations with family and friends. All the holiday fun can add up to an extra 7 million tons of trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, according to Stanford University, but there are plenty of ways to manage the mess! Just read on for a few of our best tips, including how to prepare your Marion County trash pickup plan for the holidays. Take a look.
Opt for reusable wrapping options
As you pick out the perfect gifts for everyone on your list, make your wrapping a little more sustainable by choosing reusable options, such as beautiful holiday gift bags. You can also use items you already have around the house, such as newspapers and magazines, to craft new wrapping paper without having to purchase another roll!
Plan ahead
One of the best ways to avoid a post-holiday trash pile-up is to prepare ahead of time. In the weeks ahead, Florida Express Environmental will be observing Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. On these holidays, our offices will be closed and there will be no collection—and during holiday weeks, all customers will only be on a one-day delay for the remainder of the week. While this isn’t a large delay, you may still want to plan ahead to dispose of as much trash and recycling as possible before the brief break. See our holiday pickup schedule and ensure that your trash is placed curbside before 7 a.m. so that it’s picked up ahead of your holiday celebrations. This may also be a good reminder to get wrapping and other holiday prep done ahead of time so that you can enjoy a smooth holiday experience with as little waste as possible.
To recycle or not to recycle?
At this time of year, we go through lots of wrapping paper! If you’re wondering whether or not you can recycle your gift’s trimmings, see if it can be scrunched or crumpled up into a ball. If so, remove the tape and bows and feel free to recycle it! If not, your wrapping paper may be made out of a metallic foil or flocked material that should not be recycled.
Easily dispose of large items with bulk pickup
If you receive a new appliance as a gift (or a gift to yourself!) this year, you may be wondering how to dispose of your old, large items. Fortunately, Florida Express Environmental can provide bulk pickup services to remove old mattresses, appliances, décor and other items. Just call us today to find out more.
For yard waste pickup…
At this time of year, Florida’s beautiful weather allows for some quality outdoor time and yard work!
